Mirjam van Beek creates unique hand painted silks from her studio in the Scottish Borders. Her work expresses a strong and exciting sense of colour and the free style use of moulded silk is unique. MIRJAM:
"I draw inspiration from my personal response to people, nature and landscape, music and art. I am influenced by my travels to far away places and exploring different cultures, as well as my background, growing up in Holland.
I love colour - my work is expressive, strong and vibrant. I use luxurious silks; natural, flowing, soft yet strong. My work is abstract and created for the pure joy of exploring and combining the colours. People respond to each piece in their own way, making it personal to them.
My fabrics are created by hand painting, spraying or screen printing with rich, steam fix dyes. Each piece is a 'one-off' with enduring quality. I also use my silks to sculpt and enhance decorative items - such as lampshades, candle holders and other pieces. Commissions are welcome - I am happy to advise and create something individual for your home, complementing your colour scheme.
I have recently introduced new fabrics and techniques into my range - exploring heavier weights for different seasons of the year - combining subtle printed motifs which emerge from the depth and warmth of the colours themselves".
